Welcome

Friends,

The world’s longest flights are getting longer and longer.

Reading a recent list got me thinking about the flights I am most hopeful to take this year, so I decided to write about them today.

543 words—let’s get going.

New mattress pads on Air France for passengers in business class.

Basic economy comparison: United vs. Delta.

Interesting headline compared to the collapse of US-Canada traffic.

Story

My family flew on the 5th longest flight in the world last June from Melbourne to Dallas. While I like airplanes as much as the next guy, I did not realize we were on #5 globally. Yahtzee!

Our flight’s distance was barely less than the #4: Qantas’ globe crossing non-stop from Perth to London.

Now to be fair we went ‘the short way’ insofar as we were on the eastbound journey that clocked in at just over fifteen hours in the air. The westbound journey from Dallas to Melbourne runs over seventeen hours. That is the real ‘long way’.

And my children were true champions for being along for the ride—we all had a blast. Qantas knows how to cross the Pacific (we flew economy).

This brings us to today—here are three flights I hope to take this year:

  1. Singapore Airlines from New York to Singapore: this is currently the longest flight in the world — well, JFK’s departure is technically the longest, but I have clients I love in Jersey and Newark was my first United base so that side of the river holds a special place in my heart. JFK or EWR’s non-stops to Singapore on SQ will check the box.

  2. Air France’s La Première from Paris to Dubai: this is an epic daylight flight in the world’s best first class and it is a gem on points (but you have to be Platinum on Air France to use miles for the ticket).

  3. Virgin Atlantic Upper Class from Los Angeles to London: this flight fits into the subset of ‘really great redemptions’ using Virgin Atlantic points, plus you have access to the new Delta One Lounge at LAX and Virgin’s new LAX Clubhouse (that just opened today).

United’s forthcoming service from Tokyo to Ulaanbaatar get’s an honorable mention from me as well—goodness it would be so cool to fly one of the Guam-based 737’s into Mongolia. However I have no plans nor reason to go there at the moment.

Anyways, we will see how this all goes and if any other flights make the list (and/or bump one of the top three off).

Big Picture: What flights are you hoping to catch this year? Serious question: drop me a reply to let me know.

Happy flying.
