Welcome

Friends,

First, happy Saturday.

Yesterday’s email sent with a typo in the email subject line. If you noticed and you thought “oh how careless” you would not be wrong. But there are real problems in this world and fortunately a typo is not one of them.

Anyways, thank you for flying with me here. You are the hero of this story!

407 words—let’s get going.

Story

It’s Saturday night! I will keep this brief.

Spirit has recently exited reorganization and is making moves to be more competitive (read: deliver a product worth paying for). They are also hemorrhaging cash. Ultra-low-cost airline products have not fared well in North America post-pandemic.

I was scheduled to try their ‘new and improved’ product in October, but a hurricane canceled the trip. I have until next fall to re-use the flight credit.

Historically, I have avoided Spirit—but I am eager to see their attempt at being more passenger-friendly in action. Specifically:

  1. They now offer a semi-first-class cabin for a nominal upgrade, which is intriguing.

  2. Their network is surprisingly versatile out of a lot of markets (like Dallas)—as in they go to many places, just with less frequency than larger airlines.

  3. Spirit’s fares are really low—which makes you wonder if you are crazy not to try them? Or if they are in fact the crazy ones?

One also still gets TSA Pre-Check, credit card airport lounge access, etc. (as applicable) when you fly Spirit, too. So the airport experience outside of the baggage check in process can remain efficient.

I will let you know how I end up using the credit and how it goes.

Big Picture: With recent changes, Spirit may be one of the better values in air travel today (in North and Central America plus the Caribbean). I am eager to find out if that is in fact the case.

Happy flying.
