Foreign Tourist Traffic to the USA

(And how I am planning to keep OneWorld Emerald status👇🏼)

Friends,

This month, British Airways implemented a major change to how their elite status works—shifting from a distance-based system to one based entirely on how much money you spend. That may work well for business travelers booking last-minute fares, but for those of us who travel strategically (often on partner airlines or with well-priced premium tickets), it makes qualification significantly harder.

In my case, it effectively cuts me out.

So now I’m doing some homework, as I still want to maintain OneWorld Emerald status—which means I need a new airline to be loyal to.

While I fly American Airlines frequently—mostly on domestic routes out of Dallas—I’ve stopped chasing status with them directly. Instead, I’ve leaned on the power of foreign carrier elite status. That’s been the real game-changer.

For example: top-tier status with a carrier like British Airways or Qatar Airways (both OneWorld partners with AA) gives me access to Flagship Lounges, priority check-in, boarding, free bags, and better seating when I fly American—even in economy domestically.

The list goes on, as OneWorld Emerald benefits are even better when traveling overseas. Bottom line: I’m now seriously considering a switch to Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

If you’re flying American regularly but not racking up Loyalty Points, it may be worth exploring a similar route. Foreign airline status can be a back door to elite perks that dramatically improve the experience—without having to play revenue-based games.

More to come, but I wanted to share in case you’re also thinking through where your loyalty should land this year. I’ll keep you posted on my progress, here.

Fly well.

If accurate, this is impressive. I’ve yet to fly Emirates and am eager to do so.

Foreign tourist traffic is down in the USA, but outbound traffic is (to my general understanding) making up the difference for air carriers at the moment.
